In 1839, Viennese businessman August Zang started a bakery called
Boulangerie Viennoise in Paris. There he sold typical Viennese breads and
delicacies, including the kipferl, the forerunner of the croissant.
The appetising bread caught the fancy of the French, who immediately
renamed it croissant, which again refers to the shape of the crescent
moon.
